Blood-curdling details have emerged in the investigation into a 300-person network in Istanbul and Tekirdağ that caused millions of liras of damage to the public by referring newborn babies to hospitals they had an agreement with. As part of the investigation, 41 suspected gang members, including 14 doctors and 17 nurses, were detained on April 26. Police investigations revealed that in addition to causing public damage, the gang worked like a murder network. Tape recordings revealed that doctors and nurses in the network were
blatantly causing the death of babies.
ANOTHER INFANT DEATH
According to Yeni Şafak, on October 19, 2023, a baby transferred from outside Istanbul to a hospital contracted by the network and admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit died. In the case of the death, which occurred during the 6-month period of police surveillance, nurses at the hospital told the intensive care doctor that the baby died as a result of food getting into the respiratory tract. In the interview, when the doctor asked, "Did he die from aspiration?" the nurse replied, "It was already clear that he was going to die. The nurse friend fed him. He burped her, and when he moved on to the next baby, she died. When he realized it, there was no chance of reversing it."
"MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU'RE INTUBATED"
The rest of the speech is an attempt to hide the fact that the baby died due to negligence. According to the records, the nurse said to the doctor, "Let me make it look like you are intubated, which is deteriorating in the file. Let's register the death in this way," he says. The nurse again said to the doctor who said yes to the nurse's suggestion, "He is stable on the other days, so there is nothing to intubate, but he died, so what can we do", while the doctor scandalously said, "Show him intubated from the other days, that is, from the day he came to the hospital. All the best. I feel sorry for this kid. He was going to die anyway. He survived," he instructs. On the other hand, it was also determined that the doctor in charge of intensive care when the baby died was not in the hospital at the time and was directed to intervene by another doctor reached by the nurses by phone.
THEY KNOWINGLY LEFT HIM TO DIE
Scandalous conversations between nurses working in hospitals and doctors and among themselves were also reflected in the tapes. Nurse Ç.D. told doctor İ.G., with whom she had a phone conversation, about a sick baby, "This one becomes 80-82, then 98. I'm done now. Is he dying, let him do whatever he is doing," he was heard saying in the conversation recordings. The conversation between two nurses in one of the hospitals about a sick baby was blood-curdling. Nurse M.S. responded to nurse H.B.'s words "M.S., kill the child". It is recorded that he responded as "I'm going to kill him, but even if I kill him, you know it's a problem".
THEY PUT ANOTHER BABY'S X-RAY
After the death of a baby who died while intubated in the hospital, the nurses who prepared the death file realized that there was no chest X-ray in the deceased baby's file. The nurses reported the situation to the neonatal intensive care doctor and the doctor said, "Take a chest X-ray of another intubated baby and put it in the deceased baby's file".
