B. W. jailed over £24,000 bogus health insurance claims
Jailed in Yorkshire after attempting to defraud three insurance companies by making false claims for medical treatment.
According to City of London Police B. W., 34, is reported to have made more than 100 claims under nine different names between December 2018 and September 2019.
B.W. was sentenced to 12 months in jail. The accused had previously pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud.
S.R., police officer, analyzed four policies with similar claims, all in the Yorkshire area, and came to the conclusion that one person was behind these policies.
The investigation uncovered a total of 54 allegations in connection with these policies, and the case was referred to the Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED) for investigation.
The insurance company contacted 10 medical specialists involved in the allegations to enquire them about the treatments allegedly provided. It was stated that the specialists did not perform these treatments and that the receipts issued by the policyholders were forged.
In September 2019, IFED officers arrested B. W. at a family member’s house.
According to City of London Police, B.W. took full responsibility for the bogus claims in the interview with IFED officers.
He admitted previously having health insurance with one of the providers through a former employer, and therefore knew how the cover worked. B.W. stated that he took out four policies in different names for the purpose of committing fraud as he was short on money and used computers both at home and in his local library to forge receipts from medical professionals, taking logos from the internet.
B.W. also confessed that he used his grandmother’s bank account details to receive the payments from the claims.
